How Can I Train My Dog to Sit?

Slowly lift the treat upward and slightly backward over your dog’s head. As their eyes follow the treat, their bottom will naturally lower to the ground. The moment your dog sits, praise them warmly and give the treat.

3. Add the Command “Sit”

Once your dog begins to understand the movement, introduce the verbal cue “Sit.” Say it clearly just before you guide them with the treat. Over time, your dog will learn to connect the word with the action.

4. Practice Short, Frequent Sessions

Keep training sessions short—around 5 minutes—to prevent boredom. Repeat the exercise a few times each day. Consistency is key to helping your dog learn quickly and confidently.

5. Slowly Reduce Treats

When your dog reliably sits on command, start giving treats less often. Replace some treats with praise or gentle petting. This helps your dog obey the command even without food rewards.
